Y~iinutes
PLANNING COMMISSION
Page 2
the City to establish a better policy with regard to street
names. Mr. Harris stated that the developers generally
name the streets, that these names are submitted to the City,
Post Office, County and other agencies for consideration.
Mr. Hughes reiterated that in the event of an emergency
one would have a difficult time getting Via de los Milagros
across over the telephone. He then cited other complicated
names throughout the City. He said he is not suggesting
that current names of streets be changed, but is asking
for a policy to be established concerning new ones. Commissioner
Doherty asked Mr. Hughes to define foreign names because
if they were all eliminated, the only names left would
be Indian names. Mr. Hughes reiterated that English sounding
or common Spanish names like "Rodeo" is what he is suggesting.
Jim Johnson, 5135 Oakdale, asked about a traffic study
prepared for the Stoneridge area. The Chairman told Mr.
Johnson that this is a scheduled item and will be considered
later in the evening.
Commissioner Doherty asked about the Newspaper Dispenser
ordinance. Mr. Harris stated that the staff needed a little
more time to work on it. Commissioner Doherty stated that
the situation is getting worse all of the tiime and he
wants an ordinance before the Commission on 9/14/83 with
no more continuances. Mr. Swift stated that he has had
conversations personally and by telephone with newspapers
and in some instances their attorneys who are concerned
that if an ordinance is approved for Pleasanton other cities
will automatically adopt it and perhaps it wouldn't apply
to other circumstances. The newspapers drafted
an ordinance for consideration, however, they cannot seem
to agree amongst themselves concerning it. Mr. Swift assured
the Commission that a draft ordinance would be presented
on September 14, 1983.
MATTERS INITIATED BY COMMISSION MEMBERS
The Commission requeste the status o the Chuck E. Cheese
sign. Mr. Harris stated that a citation hearing will
be scheduled. Mr. Swift stated that a letter was sent
to them today. Commissioner Lindsey asked about the mouse
on the building. Mr. Harris said it was up apparently
for a day or two. Mr. Harris stated that staff is still waiting
for a sign proposal for the entire shopping center.
Chairman Jamieson announced that since parks are so often a
subject of conversation in conjunction with various developments
of certain areas, he has asked Dolores Bengtson, Director of
Recreation and Human Services to address the Commission on
the status of parks in the City. She presented the Commission
with an updated list of the Inventory of City Parks and reviewed
the location and status of each, i.e., status of development.
She stated that an interesting statistic is that the national
standard is five acres of parks per 1000 people
_..._..__ ..T......._. _. ..,. __.... .. ._^. __. ._. _.. _...ti.~ .._~... _...,. .. .. .. ..~... .. .... _. ~.
