MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
11/9/83
Page 16
his residence in Del Prado is Medium Density and not Low Density. Mr. Griffith indicated
he was not aware that his property is Medium Density.
Mr. Griffith then addressed the shape of the existing park and felt it was not shaped properly.
Mr. Harris stated the Parks and Recreation Commission did look at this site for possible expansion of Hansen
park but felt it unjustified in view of the fact that there is an existing
park as well as a tennis park and other facilities already in the area.
Commissioner Doherty indicated that Vintage Hills is in dire need of a park and there are
other areas in Pleasanton which need parks, i.e., the downtown area. He felt other parts
of town needed to be taken care of first in view of the lack of funds available for such use.
Mr. Griffith felt that the surplus school property is being sold in the fashion of afire house
sale.' He hoped that the schools' calculations are correct. Chairman Jamieson indicated
that Mr. Hagler and others of the School District have carefully studied the need for schools
within the City.
Commissioner Doherty stated he would go along with the School District's judgment, but
felt that 50 acres was an awful lot of land to dispose of. Mr. Griffith said he would like
a park or a school in Del Prado.
Sue Evans, 5610 Paseo Navarro, didn't not believe the sites to be surplus. She said the schools
are extremely overcrowded. Walnut Grove anticipated 92 kindergarten children and ended
up with 140. She was appalled at the development which has occurred in Pleasasnton over
the past two years. She stated there is no additional school site planned for the area. She
also stated she wasn't notified of the public hearing on this matter. Mr. Harris indicated
he didn't believe that Paseo Navarro was within 300' of the site but that the Clerk would
be happy to put the speakers on the list for notification. Mrs. Evans said she came to the
City Hall and no one could tell her where the property line was. Mr. Harris indicated that
there are maps in the City which the staff would be happy to show her.
Chairman Jamieson asked Mr. Hagler to address the comments of the previous speaker.
Mr. Hagler indicated there was a problem at Walnut Grove, but one which was taken care
of promptly. He stated there is not a shortage of school sites. He said the total district
closed one school and that their projections are within 10 students for the district. He explained
the movement of pupils from the sixth grade to the elementary schools. He said it took
time to make changes but they have done so and there is plenty of room for the students.
They did have to add a teacher for the kindergarten class at Walnut Grove but there was
plenty of room at that school to do that.
Ron Schneider, 650 Orofino Ct., stated that the Vintage Hills Ho meowners have taken a
vote at their Board of Directors' meeting and urged that Items 2, 4, and 5 be Low Density
Residential and not Medium Density Residential.
Frank Belecky, 892 Madeira, said it shocks him to sell school district land to put roofs on
existing buildings. He felt the money from the sale of the properties would just trickle away
and very little benefit will be had. He did not want the School District property sold. He
felt that the homeowners of the areas paid for the land originally and should probably be
reimbursed if the lands were sold. Regarding the possibility of putting Medium Density
housing on Crellin, he requested that that particular property be Low Density. He felt
there was too much traffic in the area already to have additional Medium Density housing.
He urged that if the School District did sell their properties, the money be invested in something
and not just used and eventually be trickled away.
The public hearing was closed.
-16-
