Minutes
Planning Commission
August 28, 1985
discussed the fact that a landscape plan will be done for the
area, and the area will be seeded just before the rains.
Signs Displayed at Alameda County Fairgrounds
Chairman Wilson stepped down as decision-maker on this issue, and
was replaced with Sharrell Michelotti.
Mr. Swift explained that Fairgrounds signs would not go before
the Design Review Board because they do not need City approval.
This is a referral for input only. Hopefully the Fair will take
the City's recommendations into account when considering signing
for the Fairgrounds.
Commissioner Inner asked Mr. Wilson to discuss this item. Mr.
Wilson said he could discuss it but was reluctant to do so
because he is a Director on the Fair Board.
Mr. Wilson stated that a study will be made to determine the
proper height, etc. of the sign. Discussion of signing at this
point is preliminary. The primary effect is getting traffic off
of Bernal Avenue to Valley and into the parking area. The County
will be opening Gate 12 which will enable cars coming south to
have their own left turn gate off of Valley Avenue. Commissioner
Michelotti asked Mr. Wilson what size of sign is needed. Mr.
Wilson said they don't expect to draw freeway traffic with the
sign.
Commissioner Lindsey asked if the purpose of the sign is to show
some kind of computerized reader board and asked if the board
would be used the rest of the year. Mr. Wilson stated that there
are more events during non Fair time so it would be used all
year. Commissioner Inner liked a monument-type sign as presented
in the material furnished to the Commissioners.
Commissioner Wellman felt it was important to have a computerized
signing program because 150 different organizations can
conceivably make use of the fairgrounds in one month.
Commissioner Michelotti asked if the sign could have the
capability to designate certain parking areas. Mr. Wilson
indicated that changes to the signing would all be done at the
main office.
Commissioner Lindsey urged the Fair to pursue some type of
attractive signing.
COMMUNICATIONS
REFERRALS
MATTERS FOR COMMISSION'S INFORMATION
City Council Actions on Planning Commission Cases 8/20/85
meeting.
- 11 -
