Minutes
Planning Commissio:
4/24/R5
Warnick during working hours and discuss the concerns with him or
his staff.
REVISIONS AND OMISSIONS TO THE AGENDA
Mr. Harris indicated that Item 6g relating to PUD-85-6, Gordon
Bingham, be continued to 5/8/85.
MATTERS INITIATED BY COMMISSION MEMBERS
Vice Chairman Wilson announced that tonight is the last night
Gregg Doherty will be on the Planning Commission (he has served
the City since 1974). He asked Commissioner Lindsey to present
Resolution No. 2634 commending Commissioner Doherty and Mr.
Lindsey complied. Vice Chairman Wilson then presented a plaque
from the Commission to Doherty honoring the faithful years of
service of their colleague. Chairman Doherty also unwrapped a
helium-balloon covered present which consisted of a coffee mug
which was presented by an anonymous donor.
Chairman Doherty then thanked all of his colleagues, City staff
and citizens of Pleasanton who has worked with him during his
many years of service.
Z-85-59, Bill Hirst et al
Application of Bill Hirst et al for design review approval for a
comprehensive sign program at 235, 239 and 243 Main Street
(Downtown Center). Zoning for the property is C-C/C-O (Central
Commercial/Civic Overlay) District.
Mr. Harris presented the staff report recommending approval of
the proposal. Mr. Harris stated that staff has had many
conversations with Mr. Hirst regarding this application, but that
one half of the shopping center is owned by the Earlys and Mr.
Hirst has been discussing the matter with them.
Vice Chairman Wilson didn't think it was fair that Mr. Hirst
couldn't have his signs because Mr. Early may refuse forever to
participate in a signing program. Mr. Hirst has no control over
this. Mr. Harris reiterated staff's position that one sign is
sufficient in the front to identify the shopping center. Staff
does not believe is is appropriate to identify all of the tenants
on the free-standing sign. There are no other such signs at
other shopping centers in Pleasanton.
The public hearing was opened.
Bill Hirst, 147 Bernal Avenue, did not have any problems with any
portion of the staff report except with Condition No. 2. Mr.
Hirst has had many conversations with Mr. Harris, other planning
staff members and Mr. Early concerning the sign proposal. Mr.
Early finds the tenant identification sign application
acceptable. He has indicated he would remove the 'downtown
centre' sign which they have, but Mr. Hirst did not feel it is
fair to require nothing be done until a person over whom he has
absolutely no control wants to remove the sign.
