Minutes
Planning Commission
May 14, 1986
Commissioner Hoyt was very much against individual signs and
could not recommend approval of a 32' long sign for Subaru.
Commissioner Berger also felt the Subaru sign to be quite large.
Chairman Lindsey regarding the Trammell Crow signing, felt they
were very attractive and had no problem with three tenant signs
with 20" high letters, but would like to see some limitation on
the project regarding a pole sign. With regard to BMW, he liked
the pylon sign and felt it was attractive, neat and clean. He
also felt directional signs are appropriate. With regard to
Val Strough, he could support one pylon sign 24' for four auto
dealers on that one sign. He couldn't support four separate
signs as that would be to oversign the property.
Commissioner Innes stated that the applicants and staff have been
trying to find a compromise that would meet everybody's needs.
He was concerned that if BMW received their sign approval,
Val Strough had a couple of signs and Trammell Crow sells more
land there would be a sign proliferation. He stated he agreed
with Mr. Inderbitzen that the pylon sign looked good but
expressed concern abut sign proliferation. He would prefer to
have one pylon in a prominent place on the Val Strough site and
keep signs on the walls for the individual dealerships. He
disagreed three tenant names on the Rose Pavilion sign would be
appropriate, but if Mr. Schnugg feels they will not come in with
another major sign application, he could support it.
Chairman Lindsey addressed staff asking about the Val Strough
sign situation. Mr. Swift indicated that staff would prefer to
see Val Strough come back in with drawings depicting the
recommendations of the Commission for their consideration as
opposed to approving the sign programming tonight with
modifications.
The public hearing was closed.
A motion was made by Commissioner Innes, seconded by Commissioner
Wellman that Val Strough be continued so that they may work with
the staff on a new proposed signing program. This motion carried
5-0.
A motion was made by Commissioner Innes, seconded by
Commissioners Wellman that the Signs for Trammell Crow be
approved as follows:
1. One 34' high 'Rosewood Pavilion' sign along the freeway
frontage which includes up to 3 anchor tenant names, with
additional berming at the base to reduce the height of the
sign while reducing the size of the structure.
2. Two 'Rosewood Pavilion' signs to be located in the northwest
and southwest corners of the intersection of Rosewood Avenue
and Santa Rita Road.
3. One 'retail' pavilion monument sign with no tenant
identification.
- 5 -
_1._
