requested that the Commission delay approval so that he would <br />have time to contact at least seven different companies in the <br />immediate area who could be affected by the application. <br />Mr. ~Javis indicated he was not really opposed to the facility <br />itself but felt it was not a goad location for children who <br />might arrive on bikes. He said a large number of trucks are in <br />ir+ the area and disagreed with hir. Armstrong regarding the pear <br />traffic times. <br />Commissioner Hovingh asked Mr. Davis if he would have preferred <br />another trucF~ing company instead of the batting facility. <br />!'fir. Davis responed that 1-+e would not, but that his concern was <br />primarily{ for the children"s safety. <br />Commissioner Mahern discussed the park:ing and truck traffic area <br />with Mr. Davis. He again reiterated that his prime concern was <br />for the safety of the children who arrive by bi~;e. <br />Mr. Armstrong returned to the podium. He commended Mr. Davis <br />for his concern about the safety issues. However, he felt that <br />it was unfounded in that typically Little League players are <br />transported by their parents who carpool. He did not think that <br />bikes or skateboards would create a safety problem. <br />Commissioner Mahern felt that children of 11 to 12 years might <br />be inclined to ride their bikes to the location and felt that <br />safety might be a logical concern. <br />The public hearing was closed. <br />Corr+mi ssi oner- Tarver asked Mr . Quagl i a to address the i ssue of <br />safety for bikers. He asked if there is a sidewalk on Johnson <br />L?rive. Mr. Quaglia said the city is presently wori~:ing on <br />installing a sidewalk there_ He stated that staff has visited a <br />similiar facility in Concord in a very similiar neighborhood and <br />dad not observe a great number of bi~:es being used for <br />transportation. <br />Commissioner Tarver asked how far aevay from a residential area <br />was the Concord facility located. C1r. Quaglia said about a <br />mile_ <br />Discussion was held about the number of bikers observed going to <br />neighboring facilities such as AVACs. Staff felt that most <br />children were transported by parents. <br />Commissioner Hovingh felt the application presented a broad <br />spectrum of recreational opportunities for F'Ieasanton; he felt <br />the safety regarding traffic was not as great as the aspect of <br />facing a batting machine. He supported the application. <br />Commissioner Tarver agreed with Commissioner Hovingh regarding <br />the need for recreational facilities; however, he was greatly <br />F'age 6 <br />
