Zoning for the property is CC
(Central Commercial) - Civic Overlay District; and
continue Items 5a and 6h, Case UP-88-23, Stanley and
Case RZ-88-1, City of Pleasanton to the Planning Commission
meeting of September 14, 1988.
The Planning Commission agreed to the above changes.
MATTERS INITIATED BY COMMISSION MEMBERS
Commissioner Berger was concerned about the traffic islands
installed on Foothill Road next to Foothill Knolls Drive as she
felt them to be unsafe. Chairman Michelotti agreed with these
concerns and stated she understands that at least one individual
ran into the curbing and while it didn't cause an accident did
cause damage to a car.
Bill Van Gelder, Traffic Engineer, City of Pleasanton, explained
that the islands were designed in 1983 with a rural atmospher-
type of approach. Most of the approaching road is 10'-12' lanes
depending on where you are re on the road. The pavement was
widened to 14' and the islands were installed. It gives the
appearance of restricting the roadway, but it is actually widened
in the area of the approach. The alignment makes it appear
different. Since the accident has occurred, the City has added
additional reflectors, signing and markings on top of the curb.
Since the additional painting has been installed, Mr. Van Gelder
hasn't noticed any tire marks on the curb indicating there is
still a problem. Chairperson Michelotti stated that while
driving northbound in a straight stretch if one glances to the
right at the new construction for just a minute one comes close
to hitting the curb. She noted that high school students drive
the area adding to her concern. Commissioner Berger asked if
there has been any Police Department input or reports with regard
to this. Sergeant Balch reported that there have been no injury
accidents, but there has been a report of a tire blowout. Mr.
Van Gelder reported that the only incidents of which he is aware
is one where a Volvo swerved to keep from hitting a deer, and a
Mercedes swerved to keep from hitting a squirrel.
-2-
