2.) Tri-Valley Adolescent Health Initiative Youth Survey Results <br />The review of the survey results provided by the Tri Valley Adolescent Health Initiative <br />shows that 15% of Pleasanton 11th graders reported that they had driven under the <br />influence of drugs and/or alcohol; 31% of Pleasanton 11th graders reported that they <br />had been in a car in which the driver was under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol; <br />and 52% of 11th graders reported that they usually or always secure a sober driver if <br />they are out with friends and plan on being under the influence. <br />With a focus on the immediate concerns of Pleasanton youth drinking and engaging in <br />related high-risk behaviors, staff initiated a number of actions targeting these unsafe <br />behaviors. The following list includes actions taken this year by staff, in light of these <br />recent California Healthy Kids and Tri Valley Adolescent Health Initiative Youth survey <br />results. <br />What has been done <br />1) Staff has consulted with counselors and health teachers to enhance curriculum <br />related to teen drinking, teen driving, and other teen health issues. These <br />educators have provided valuable guidance regarding effective techniques for <br />working with students to promote health and safety and have agreed to <br />augment curriculum as needed. <br />2) Staff has begun to disseminate the resource information booklet "That One <br />Place" to all middle and high school students in March (created by the Tri <br />Valley Adolescent Health Initiative). <br />3) Staff has published results of the California Healthy Kids survey and reviewed <br />results from the Tri-Valley Adolescent Health Initiative Youth survey. <br />4) Pleasanton Unified School District has educated the community through <br />newspaper articles, newspaper advertisements, school newsletters, information <br />forums, and community television presentations. <br />5) The City of Pleasanton and the Pleasanton Unified School District jointly <br />sponsored the "Youth in Government Day" March 13, 2007. During this day, <br />student forums were held to continue the conversation about the issues of teen <br />health raised in the Healthy Kids Survey and the Tri Valley Adolescent Health <br />Initiative Youth Survey. <br />6) Amador Valley Adult and Community Education has sponsored parent <br />education classes focused on initiating conversations between parents and <br />teens. <br />7) Both comprehensive high schools have continued to present "Every 15 <br />Minutes" for juniors and seniors. <br />8) The Pleasanton Police Department has enhanced the curriculum in the DARE <br />program in 5th and 8th grade with alcohol awareness information. <br />9) Staff has scheduled assemblies at the three high schools for sophomores on <br />driving laws to be presented by the Pleasanton Police Department. <br />10) Staff, in conjunction with Amador Valley Adult and Community Education has <br />scheduled a Town Hall Meeting scheduled for March 29, 2007, intended to <br />Page 2 of 4 <br />
