The keynote speaker is Ralph Cantor, <br />Coordinator of Tobacco Education, from the Alameda County Office of <br />Education. <br />Next steps <br />1) Secondary school counselors have agreed to pilot a new curriculum/program <br />with counselors from "Community Intervention," a company which creates <br />curriculum and professional development for health educators and counselors. <br />2) As a follow-up to the Town Hall Meeting, staff will encourage the community to <br />get more involved in providing additional resources for students and their <br />families through community agencies. <br />3) School counselors along with Amador Valley Adult and Community Education, <br />will provide additional resources for parents to "get the conversation started" <br />with their teens. <br />4) Amador Valley Adult and Community Education and the Pleasanton Police <br />Department will sponsor additional forums for parents and community <br />organizations on the topic of student health and wellness. <br />5) Amador Valley Adult and Community Education will offer more parent <br />education classes to assist families and students. <br />6) The curriculum department will provide additional staff development for <br />teachers and counselors with the focus on student wellness (e.g. grief and <br />crisis training, chemical dependency training, signs of suicide and dealing with <br />teen suicide, strategies for discussing child abuse and sexual assault training). <br />7) Health teachers will enhance health class curriculum with more hands on <br />experiences for students, such as smoking demonstrations, and the effects of <br />alcohol and drugs presentation. <br />8) Pleasanton Unified School District health teachers, counselors and principals <br />will offer parent information about student health concerns during walk through <br />registration, Open House and Back to School nights. <br />9) Staff will recruit students, additional parents and community members to get <br />involved in the Lifetime Planning Advisory Committee. <br />10) Staff will pilot a "push in" program with counselors and health teachers to <br />distribute information on student wellness to juniors and seniors at the high <br />school level. <br />11) Staff will explore a partnership with the Alameda County Office of Education <br />and West Ed for federal grant funding for a comprehensive alcohol education <br />program. <br />12) Staff will review meaningful programs for 9th and 10th graders, such as those <br />provided by M.A.D.D.
