The Tri-Valley
Adolescent Health Initiative also surveyed teens in the Tri-Valley area and reported to
the Board of Trustees on November 7, 2006.
The report included in the backup to this item is intended to provide an update on new
and ongoing activities which address the issues related to the reports' findings.
Staff recommends that we continue to review follow-up actions which promote safe and
healthy practices for Pleasanton youth. Some state and categorical funds are available
to focus on students' health needs.
DISCUSSION
Follow Up to the California Healthy Kids Survey Results and Tri-Valley
Adolescent Health Initiative Youth Survey:
Areas of Focus:
1.) California Healthy Kids Survey Results
When reviewing the survey results from the most recent survey (Fall 2005) that have
been provided, the most immediate concern of District staff was the increasing use of
alcohol by 11th grade students. This was indicated by our 11th grade students reporting
that during the last 30 days, 23% drank 5 drinks in a couple of hours (binge drinking). In
addition, 8% of our seventh graders reported that, in the last thirty days, they had drunk
a full glass of alcohol. 53% of our non-traditional students reported that they had driven
in a car when they had been drinking or a friend had been drinking and was driving. The
data on this issue was corroborated by the staff results which showed that 20% of the
adults see alcohol use as a moderate to severe problem among students in Pleasanton.
