Chairperson Kummer opened the meeting for Public Comment at 7:30 p.m.
Bill Rose, 5550 San Juan Way — advised that as a representative for core cyclists, he was not in favor of
trail riding on sidewalks, and was concerned with some of the proposals presented. He was especially
concerned with some of the proposed routes, particularly going north on the Iron Horse Trail at
Stoneridge Drive and Santa Rita Road. He wondered how the plan would get trail users onto Stoneridge
Drive. He would prefer to see the trail go up Santa Rita to West Las Positas, then make the left hand
turn. Mr. Rose made several suggestions, which included: 1) including a bike box; 2) adding a bike lane
in the bus lane; and 3) putting a ramp on the Dublin side.
Ursula Goldstein, 5884 Corte Mente suggested taking the trail along the Chabot Creek from the BART
station. She also supported Mr. Rose's comments.
Mr. Wolfe advised that the cost of adding crossings under I -580 to Dublin would be prohibitive. He also
discussed the Alamo Canal Trail Extension to Dublin, an important link to help alleviate many of the
issues being discussed. Mr. Townsend provided information about the August 23 public input meeting to
discuss this particular issue. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. He also suggested the City consider
signage that would reflect the route from BART to Santa Rita Road as a "connector" (not a trail
segment) until a Class I trail could be established.
Sharon Piekarski, 3506 Churchill Court — indicated that she does not like to ride her bicycle on
Pleasanton streets because of traffic. She discussed the difficulties of riding on city streets to BART.
Ms. Piekarski didn't think Option 1 was feasible, and didn't like the idea of following Walnut Creek and
putting trails on sidewalks. She would like to see the Iron Horse Trail kept on a trail without going on
city sidewalks. She asked the Committee to consider keeping trails off city streets.
Mr. Wolfe discussed problems with mid -block crossings and the costs for building bridges over busy
streets. He did not feel the community would support mid -block crossings. He confirmed with Ms.
Piekarski that she felt the trail route along Santa Rita Road was the most feasible.
Chairperson Kummer closed the meeting for public comment at 7:47 p.m.
Chairperson Kummer advised that the Mayor and City Council members are excited about opening the
Iron Horse Trail in Pleasanton as quickly as possible. He suggested moving forward with Option 2 as a
temporary connector that could be opened in September, without the Arroyo Mocho Trail ramp, but
keeping Option 3 as a possibility for a permanent solution.
Mr. Jones, Mr. Quigley and Ms. Compton agreed with this suggestion. Ms. Compton expressed
concerns with having Option 2 become permanent once it had been established. Mr. Townsend
suggested signing it as a "route" to the Iron Horse Trail.
Ms. Kolar asked whether Option 3 would continue to be pursued. Mr. Wolfe felt that the Alamo Canal
Trail Extension would be a higher priority than pursuing Option 3. Mr. Townsend indicated that he
would continue to pursue completion of Option 3.
Trails Ad Hoc Committee
June 26, 2006
Page 4
