Plant selection shall encourage those species known to be reasonably drought tolerant in the Pleasanton area. State-of-the-art irrigation systems, designed and installed to City standards, are required. Drip irrigation systems are encouraged in appropriate areas. In general, areas less than three feet wide shall have hardscape. Surface drainage from adjacent properties shall not cross City landscape areas or sidewalks. Landscaped areas adjacent to sidewalks shall be fiat for at least two feet. In order to avoid competition between plantings and the added maintenance it requires, aggressive ground cover shall not be planted in combination with low- growing shrubs. Plant material will be selected from the City Preferred Plant Palette List. The list is not inclusive; other submittals will be considered. If retaining walls are proposed within City maintained areas, they shall not exceed 3 feet in height, shall be constructed of masonry materials, and shah not exceed 50 feet in overall length. A root deflection barrier is required for all trees installed within five feet of sidewalks or paving. Maintenance of subdivision identification signs shall be the responsibility of property owner or homeowners' association. Minimum container size for plant material shall be as follows: Ground covers - 1 gallon size container for woody ground covers, rooted cuttings (fiats) for herbaceous ground covers. Shrubs - 5 gallon - at least 50%; 50% 1 gallon size Trees - Container size may vary. Minimum 1" trunk caliper for standard trunk trees, .75" caliper for primary leaders on multi-trunk trees. The size of plant materials must correspond with that normally expected for species and variety of commercially available stock in accordance with the California State Department of Agriculture's regulations for nursery rules and rating.
