with non-native and native annual grassland. These areas of mixed ?rasslands and woodlands contain
important habitat for both woodland and wassland animals. including insect species. !\lost mixed
ecosystems found in Pleasanton tend to be oak savannah. In contrast to a woodland which has a
closed canopy a savanna canopy ranges from about 10 to 50 percent. Sycamore trees also grow within
some savannah areas in Pleasanton. although sycamores tend to be more abundant in riparian
woodland arcas.

Wetland. Wetlands arc tllOse areas that arc inundated by

water at a fretluency and duration sufficient to support vegetation typically adapted for life in saturated

soil conditions. Wetlands venerally include swamps marshes bogs. and similar areas. Typical wetland

vegetation in the Planning Area in eludes annual emergent species such as cattails sedges. watercress.

tules and curly dock. Other species include rabbit's foot grass and water smartweed. \'(/etlands

provide habitat for a number of wild creatures. inclutling waterfowl and amphibians. such as

salamanders. Fi?ure VII-1. above identifies lakes and lacustrine areas and also riparian corridors.

Riparian Corridor. Some. but not all. wetlands arc also riparian areas. Riparian vegetation grows

along streams. arroyos. and drainage ditches. Riparian woodlands dominate some watercourses and

include willows. white alders. big-leaf maples. and sycamores all tolerant of saturated soils. Valley oak.

California bay laurel. black walnut. blaek cottonwood. and California buckeye trees also grow in

Pleasanton's riparian areas. Below the riparian tree canopy arc shrubs such as poison oak. California

blackberry. poison hemlock wild oats. ryegrass mulcfat. sedges. ferns. bromes. burr clover. stinging

nettles. white swcctclovcr. wild radi:ih vetch and Inint. Other native species include California

button-bush coyote brush. mug:wort elderberry. snowberry. and California rose. Riparian woodland

is one of the most valuable native habitat types in California because it supports a diversity of wildlife

species 111any of which arc rarc or uncommon.

+he-Arroyo del Valle, Arroyo !\Iocho, Arroyo de la Laguna, and other nparian corridors in the

Planning Area art: uOfllinatetl b) 0.11 th[[:itfH) of nat1.t: .egt:tat:iun cOll3i3ting of cotton....ood,

.lycamorc, and ,...illow trcc3, and IUl ,1l~dt:ot.tH) of C;lliKHnia button I:n13h, t:B)Otc bru3h, tnug....ott,

elderberry, "tlo"bertj, California m.le, "ilia" "l.rub.., eattail, ..1,,1 poi.It,)[1 0..1<.
