Fred Bancalari, 453 Amaral Circle, stated he likes diversity of activities in the park but does not
want any delays or compromises of the park because of in-line skating interests.

C. J. MacDonald stated the City owns 12-1/2 basketball courts and 13 tennis courts but nothing
for in-line skating. Regarding skating on the pathways in the park, he stated he does that now,
but he agreed with an earlier speaker that the in-line facility could be placed away from the
tennis courts.

Brian Hess, 5175 Northway Road, felt ff ther~ is only one in-line rink, there will be competition
between younger and older kids. He feels there are too many tennis courts in Pleasanton and
that there is a need for an in-line skating park.

Rick S--, 5176 Black Avenue, feels more kids should be involved in the parks and it gives them
something to do. He feels in-line skating is a sport which is growing in town and feels it will
surpass soccer in popularity.

Mike Virani, 7813 Paseo Santa Cruz, stated his house is in front of the park. He noted in the
past, some of the neighbors have been opposed to in-line hockey as they question if it might
create a major problem for the neighborhood. If the sport is as popular as he has heard from the
speakers, he wondered if the park will accommodate the number of participants.

Commissioner Seebach asked what the concern was of the neighbors, and Mr. Virani stated they
were concerned about the noise.

Mr. Virani stated perhaps this matter should be studied by looking at other communities with in-
line hockey facilities to see how it is working for them. He also felt some of the neighbors'
concerns could be minimized if noise was considered in the layout of the in-line skating facility
in the park.

Vice Chairman Dove asked for confirmation from Mr. Virani that the neighbors had no problem
with parking on the street, as he had stated this in the past. Mr. Virani confirmed this was true,
but that there would have to be a limit. Mr. Virani stated his association had not looked at the
plans for the park which include a hockey rink.

Doug Miller, 7661 Paseo Santa Cruz, stated he is a neighbor of the park and would be against a
mixed use of the park as shown in Concepts A and B. Because in-line skating is a large sport,
he feels it deserves a larger facility in a larger park. He feels the City should investigate the
depth of interest in the sport and consider other facilities.

Jennifer Sabella, 3457 Cumberland Gap Court, felt the bridge would be a great asset for the
Valley Trails residents. One of her concerns, however, was the placement of the playground
and if there would be any changes to it. Ms. Bengtson stated they did not anticipate any changes
in the elements at the playground. Because of costs and maintenance, they decided to put one
rest room in and they tried to place it so it would be convenient for everyone including the play

Minutes
Park and Recreation Commission Meeting
March 9, 1995 Page 7
