Regarding the group picnic area, Commissioner Maas asked if it is really needed, as Sports Park
is so close.

Commissioner Dove stated it was requested by some residents as a quiet area for picnicking, etc.

Commissioner Maas stated she was not ready to give up the lighted basketball courts. She asked
if an in-line hockey rink would fit in the group picnic area.

Mr. Singer and Mr. Evans were not sure but did not thinic so.

Commissioner Seebach suggested the possibility of designing the pathways to keep skaters in one
area. He said he liked the idea of two courts for in-line to make competition available. He
liked the play area near the tennis area to leave the west end open for quiet and the neighbors
near the area. He also liked the idea of a Task Force for in-line skating. He further stated he is
also a tennis player.

Commissioner Sedlak stated he is not in favor of spending $200,000 on an in-line rink. He also
was not in favor of dasher boards because he felt they could create a dangerous situation. He
felt an open area with a berm would be appropriate.

Commissioner Sedlak acknowledged tennis is a quiet sport and felt the players would be
disturbed by skaters on the paths. He preferred that the play area be close to the tennis area for
the convenience of parents playing tennis, but felt the noise issue would be greater there than in
the northwest green area. Regarding the basketball courts in Concept B, he stated he would like
to see the scheme include an in-link rink.

Commissioner Sedlak felt the Commission shouM continue to review this matter with the element
of in-line skating included. He feels in-line skating is appropriate for all parks.

Commissioner Thorne stated he felt there was a need for in-line skating in Pleasanton and that
this seemed like a good opportunity to provide it to the community. He expressed his concern
about the impact of the project on the budget for the park and would be in favor of phasing the
in-line project in and allowing the skaters to have input into the project.

Commissioner Maas stated she did not want to hold the park up for the neighbors and
community because of in-line skating.

Vice Chairman Dove asked about the costs of the handball courts.

Mr. Fulford stated the courts were pan of the original Master Plan, and at that time the cost was
approximately $60,000 for four courts. That cost may be as much as $100,000 today.

Vice Chairman Dove asked Mark Spiller, Recreation Supervisor in charge of the City's in-line
skating program and who was in the audience, how many kids are participating in the City

Minutes
Park and Recreation Commission Meeting
March 9, 1995 Page 9
