Mr. Fulford felt this was a good suggestion, and Ms. Bengtson stated they would consider this.
A man in the audience asked when construction would begin, and Mr. Fulford answered in
spring of 1996. The Master Plan review process has to be completed, the project designed, and
plans and specifications prepared before going to bid.
Fred Barcalani, 453 Amaral Circle, asked that the handball courts be built with official handball
court dimensions. He also supports the handball sport for young people.
Judy Houdeshell, 3035 Garden Court, Tracy, California, stated she would like to see handball
courts in the park. She feels there should be at least four courts. She would also like to have a
barbecue behind the courts which could be used by families who are visiting the park with
handball players.

Mike Hodges, 6185 Via de los Cerros, commended the City for their parks. He felt the in-line
skate rink with cement and chain-link fence would not be appropriate in this park and asked that
this be reconsidered. He feels there is a need for this in the community, but feels the Sports
Park would be more appropriate.

THERE BEING NO IrtJRTHER TESTIMONY, CHAIRMAN S1LVA DECLARED THE
PUBLIC HEARING CLOSED.

Commissioner Winslow stated he does not feel the achninistration building should be used for
storage. He feels the rest rooms are needed. He agrees the putting Fen/golf practice cage is
not necessary. He is not sure a full in-line skating rink is appropriate and suggested a smaller
rink and that it be considered a demonstration project to see how it works. He agrees handball
courts should be the official size and that four would be an appropriate number. Regarding the
par course, he did not feel it is necessary. He discussed lighting for the basketball courts. He
likes having the picnic area and tot lot in the same area. Comrni~ioner Winslow concluded he
would like to see the project move forward as quickly as possible.
Commissioner Maas stated she agreed with Commissioner Winslow's comments and in particular
agreed a lighted basketball court and rest rooms are needed. She asked that staff review the
hours the tennis courts ar~ currently available to see if they can be made more available to the
public. She stated she is not sure about the in-line hockey rink.
Commissioner Sedlak feels the in-line hockey rink should be downsized.
Commissioner Seebach stated he likes the idea of basketball, tennis and handball courts. He
does not feel showers are necessary. Regarding the in-line skating rink, he feels one rink would
create a problem and that if a rink is considered, more than one should be considered as it is a
very popular sport.

Minutes
Park and Recreation Commission Meeting Page 7
January 12, 1995
