Goals & Objectives ~ Pleasanton Cultural Plan

Goal C: Communication
& Participation

To promote and market Pleasanton's cultural activities and encourage
participation.

Rationale

For centuries, artists and philosophers have discussed and debated the role of
viewer and audience member in "completing the artwork cycle." It is the dream
of most mists to expose their works to a larger public; full houses are as
rewarding for performers as they are financially successful for impresarios.
During the community planning process in Pleasanton, a unanimous sentiment
was expressed: that of a vision of involving more city, county, regional and
visitor populations in Pleasanton's arts, cultural, and heritage offerings.

The City of Pleasanton is seen by many of those interviewed for this planning
process as existing in the shadow of other major markets in both the East and
West Bays, especially in terms of professional arts programs, presenting a
formidable (though not unique) marketing challenge. Discussion in community
focus groups and key informant interviews centered on the role of the local and
regional media in promoting Tri Valley-based activities and on leisure-time and
cultural consumption habits. Proposed solutions included identifying specific
target audience segments whose involvement, attendance, and participation
should be sought: from recent arrivals (e.g., new residents) to the Tri-Va!iey
Area to the City's "daytime residents" (employees of local businesses).

Informal interviews conducted for the Cultural Plan are summarized here to
provide some background and context for goals and objectives relating to public
participation. A total of 105 interviews with Pleasanton residents were
conducted on February 14, 1998 by employees of the City at three distinct
shopping areas in the City. The following are highlights of the interviews:

Performing Am attendance None One Time Twice or More
In Pleasanton 53% 15% 32%
Elsewhere in Tri-Vailey 81% 7% 12%
Outside of Tri-Valley Area 42% 18% 40%
* In the past 12 months

/tMS Planning & Research I 1
May 1998
