treatment on the Stanley side. He was pleased with the overall design, and noted that this
was a business park as opposed to a resideatial neighborhood.
Commissioner Roberts liked the design of the fence. Mr. Bachofner noted that he
changed the horizontal element of the fence so it would not be climbable. However, the
horizontal band was maintained at the 8-foot level in order to emphasize the horizontal
nature of the building.
In response to an inquiry by G'ommissioner Roberts, Mr. Bachofner noted that the
placement of vines on the fence had not been discussed, but that he would be open to that
possibility.
Commissioner Maas noted that she would be happy to meet with the applicant to discuss
Further design ideas.
Mr_ Bachofner noted that he would be amendable to that, as long as the Brown Act is
upheld and that a Seri a] meeting did not occur.
Ms. Nerland noted that was correct, and advised that it would be best if the design
comments were received at the work session.
Commissioner Kemeny noted that this application had been peer reviewed, and believed
that the applicant's design was close to what the Commission wanted.
C=omn~issioner Kemeny noted that it would be important to maintain the corporate logo
for the signage.
A discussion of the signage options ensued.
Mr. Bachofner noted that flowering scarlet red trumpetvine would be planted on the
trellis to break up the wall mass substantially. He noted that it was a voracious climber,
and would £ill the trellis in a year. He noted that the outside of the flower is red, and the
inside of the bloom in yellow, picking up the corporate colors.
Commissioner Roberts noted that she liked Option 3 _
Chairperson Arkin preferred Option A.
It was the Con-imission's consensus to further explore design options A and 3_
Mr. Bachofner noted that while breaking up the mass of the building, it was important to
have a balanced appearance to the building.
Commissioner Roberts would like to see more integration of the tower into the building,
and that vines be used extensively on the walls to break up the building walls.
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES May 28, 2003 Page 24
