discuss the signage, and noted that the applicant would like to appear before the <br />Commission on June 11, 2003, for a formal design review. <br />Mr. Felix Bachofner, representing the applicant, noted that Mr_ Cannon's design was <br />reproduced on an inkj et printer, and added that the color £idelity did not match the actual <br />color of the building. IJe noted that at the, public hearing, he intended to bring a colors <br />and material board. He added that the red was not a primary red, and tended more <br />towards a scarlet or crimson. <br />In response to as inquiry by Con-imissioner Maas, Mr_ Bachofner noted during the design <br />phase that they referred to the heritage buildings on Main Street and noticed several <br />towers and covered walkways_ He noted that other design elements could be <br />incorporated, a.iid believed that the tower and walkways reRected the character of <br />Pleasanton's buildings. <br />Commissioner Maas questioned the use of a tower element. <br />Commissioner Roberts noted that the tower did not appear to be incorporated into the <br />building, and believed that this design appeared to be more disconnected. <br />Chairperson Arkin inquired whether more natural-appearing materials could be included <br />in the exterior design, such as the materials used in the £ire station. He noted that this <br />building was located at a gateway to the City. <br />Commissioner Maas noted that the £ire station was very expensive to design and build_ <br />Mr_ Bachofncr noted that the use of siiriilar materials would kill the project Financially. <br />Commissioner Roberts suggested that a more interesting exterior he considered. <br />Mr. Bachofner displayed a laptop presentation describing the proposed desigiz. <br />Mr. Cannon noted that he had the same reaction with respect to the tower element, and <br />tried to improve the design without changing the basic structural framework. He noted <br />that building out the area below the tower would create a more integrated appearance. He <br />discouraged fake stone detail for building exteriors, and did not believe it was appropriate <br />for this type of use_ <br />Mr. Bachofner noted that the red stripes were not painted, and were extruded metal bards <br />that stand proud from the building. They are S.nished with an automotive grade paint, and <br />he noted that the ink jet rendering did not accurately represent the color_ He had received <br />comments that the massing should be broken up, and that interesting elements be added <br />to the design. He noted that they took the comments from the peer review architect and <br />staff to heart. He noted that at some point, the level of complexity would render the <br />project Financially unfeasible, and added that they were close to that point.
