George Thomas, Chief Building Official, advised that the Building Codes look at an
equal number of men and women, from 1 to 1 5, which would require separate sex
facilities as a prescriptive requirement. The posting of occupancy requirements must be
posted.
Mr. Iserson noted that with respect to the bathroom requirement, it was actually a 60-day
time limit for the applicant to contact the City Building and Fire Departments. In
addition, he must obtain the building and other City permits.
Mr. Sim agreed to those conditions.
Commissioner Sedlak did not believe there was enough parking, given the number of
businesses in the shopping center, and cited the karate school on Main Street near the
Veterans' Building. He noted that there were often more than 30 people inside and
outside the school at any one time. He did not believe that carpooling could be assured,
and inquired whether there would be enough parking.
Mr. lserson believed there would be suf£cient parking due to the smaller size of this
facility, and noted that carpooling from the same neighborhoods was common. In
addition, the children tended to be dropped off at the begir~ning of class, and would be
picked up later. The adult classes would occur in the evening, when the other businesses
were closed. Given the timing, staff was comfortable with the parking situation. In
addition, the applicant has operated for several months, and the other tenants had not
complained about the parking.
Commissioner Roberts noted that a condition could be added to return the matter to the
Planning Commission should a problem arise.
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Kameny, Mr. Thomas described the Code
requirements for separate-sex and unisex bathrooms.
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED.
Commissioner Rob¢rts moved to approve PCUP-80 per the conditions of the staff
r¢port_
Commissioner Maas seconded the motion.
ROLL CALL VOTE
AYES: Commissioners Arkin, Maas, Kameny, Roberts, and Sedlak
NOES.
