<br />for the continuing care services developed by the former Pilgrim Haven Home <br />Corporation. Construction of San Joaquin Gardens in Fresno and Grand Lake Gardens <br />in Oakland ""as completed in 1966. <br /> <br />In 1968, American Baptist Homes Foundation of the West, Inc. was established as a <br />separate entity to support ABHOW and to receive gifts and to offer financial assistance <br />to ABHOW residents. <br /> <br />A decision to enter the field of rental housing for low-income older persons (affordable <br />housing retirement communities) led to co-sponsorship and/or management with local <br />churches for retirement homes in San Luis Obispo in 1970 (Judson Terrace), Riverside <br />in 1971 (Mount Rubidoux Manor) and Bellflower in 1973 (Bellflower Friendship Manor). <br /> <br />In 1972, ABHOW assumed ownership of Valle Verde in Santa Barbara and the <br />management of Orangewood in Phoenix. Dr. Richard E. Ice joined ABHOW as its <br />President in July of that year bringing to the organization additional expertise in financial <br />management. In the 25'h anniversary year of 1974, two additional buildings ""ere <br />completed at Piedmont Gardens in Oakland and Rosewood Retirement Community <br />opened in Bakersfield. Also during this year, Judson Park Retirement Residence in Des <br />Moines, Washington, came under ABHOW's management, leading to ABHOW <br />becoming sole member of American Baptist Homes of Washington in 1982. <br /> <br />During the 1970's, major expansions were completed at Pilgrim Haven (Wisteria in <br />1971), San Joaquin Gardens (Health Facility in 1973, Piedmont Gardens (Crestmont in <br />1975), Valle Verde (Health Facility in 1977), and Rosewood (Health facility in 1979). <br />Plymouth Village of Redlands merged with ABHOW in 1981 and Allen Temple Arms, an <br />affordable housing retirement community, opened in Oakland, which ABHOW <br />manages. In the years, 1980-86, major expansion projects were completed at Valle <br />Verde, Rosewood, Plymouth Village, San Joaquin Gardens and Grand Lake Gardens. <br />A fifty-one-unit expansion of Allen Temple Arms opened in 1987. <br /> <br />Oak Knolls Haven, an affordable housing retirement community in Santa Maria, joined <br />ABHOW in 1987. Groundbreaking took place in April 1989, for Casa de la Vista, a new <br />affordable housing retirement community in Red lands, which opened in 1990. As part <br />of an overall plan to stabilize debt service costs, ABHOW undertook a major refinancing <br />which was concluded in December of 1988. ABHOW was able to renovate and <br />upgrade all its California continuing care retirement communities recognizing that Its <br />facilities need to stay in good marketable conditions. Significant expansions at <br />Plymouth Village and San .Joaquin Gardens occurred in 1989. <br /> <br />Construction at Pacific Meadows in Carmel Valley, the first venture of ABHOW into a <br />tax credit partnership, serving a variety of income levels, was completed and opened its <br />doors to residents in 1991. Upon Dr. Ice's retirement, Mr. David B. Ferguson became <br />President. Mr. Ferguson's extensive knowledge and experience in the senior living <br />industry enabled ABHOW to remain competitive while expanding its core services and <br />programs. The newest ABHOW continuing care retirement community, The Terraces of <br />Los Gatos. completed construction and opened in December 1992. <br /> <br />Refinancing the debt for Judson Park in Des Moines, Washington, made it possible to <br />complete extensive construction and expansion of that continuing care retirement <br />
