......." ........., ................... ................ .......... - .......... .......-- .....-..... ............... .....--...... ............ ........-.............., --- ---..............

ATTACHMENT B
DETAILED APPLICANT HISTORY

American Baptist Homes of the West ("ABHOW") was founded in 1949 as Pilgrim
Haven Home Corporation with the establishment of Pilgrim Haven retirement
community in Los Altos, California as a home for American Baptist missionaries and
ministers. It was first incorporated in 1955 as "Pilgrim Haven Home". The name was
later changed to "American Baptist Homes and Hospitals of Northern California, Inc" in
1965 and later to "American Baptist Homes of the West" in 1968. Exempt status \Nas
granted by the IRS in 1957. The original purpose and commitment to provide quality
housing and health care for retired American Baptist ministers and missionaries has
expanded to include older persons regardless of occupation or religious affiliation.

ABHOW communities offer a variety of services and programs for residents. In the
continuing care retirement communities, of which there are eleven (ABHOW owns eight
in California, is the sole member of one in Washington, manages one In Arizona and
provides oversight management to one in Nevada), at least three levels of care and
services are provided: residential living, assisted living and skilled nursing care. In
addition to the three levels of care and services provided at the CCRCs, ABHOW has
developed special care units called "the Grove" for persons afflicted with Alzheimer's
and other dementias at a number of its communities with plans of providing such
services at all of its communities.

All continuing care residents receive at least one meal a day, housekeeping and laundry
services, social events and activities, transportation, and other supportive services as
needed, such as occupational, speech and physical therapies. Most continuing care
residents pay an entrance fee upon admission to their community for the continuing
care promise of services as well as a montt.Jly service fee, which is based on the
services they receive.

ABHOW also owns and/or manages 19 affordable housing retirement communities,
which are residential units for low and/or moderate-income persons. These
communities offer primarily residential living with supporting social and recreational
activities, transportation, supplemental services assisting residents in activities of daily
living, and in some communities, meal programs are provided. In some of the
communities, eligible residents receive subsidies, which reduce their monthly rent.

ABHOW has grown from one community serving nine residents in 1949 to over 4,500
residents in 30 communities in 2005. A professional, caring staff of over 2,000 delivers
the services provided for all residents.

Through its wholly owned subsidiary, Seniority, Inc., ABHOW provides sales and
marketing services to clients all over the country as well as management services to
four assisted living providers in California.

The first Executive Director was the Rev. Harold Bottemiller who brought sound
management and building experience to the organization, laying the foundation for its
future gro\Nth and development. In 1965, American Baptist Homes and Hospitals of
Northern California was formed to meet the growing need and desire of older persons
