Another $25,000 is needed to replenish the protective wood chip mulch for various City
playgrounds, to keep them compliant with the Handbook for Public Playground Safety
Standards. These chips slowly decompose and need annual replenishment.
Funding in the amount of $9,750 is recommended for the conversion of several drip irrigation
zones to shrub spray heads at Amaral Park ($7,000) and Valley Trails Park ($2,750). This
proposed funding would supplement $17,000 previously budgeted for these improvements. In
addition, $5,000 is recommended to supplement funds ($15,000) previously budgeted for
replacement of declining shrubs at Bicentennial Park. Finally, $15,000 is proposed for the
repair of the occasional cracked, lifted, or sinking sections of sidewalk located throughout the
City's park system.
The total funding for these recommended renovation projects is $99,750. This leaves a balance
of $14,000, and it is proposed that these funds be designated for the replacement of dead or
dying plant material throughout the City's 65 acres of street median landscaping. Funds would
be utilized for the replacement of occasional plants that die due to insect or disease infestations,
or outlive their useful life. Attached for the Council's review is a complete summary of all
proposed recommendations.
The Parks and Recreation Commission had previously indicated an interest in also restoring the
two (2) tennis courts in Fairlands Park. Tennis players and neighbors have stated that these
courts may be under-utilized due to continued surface cracking on the courts. It is estimated that
the cost to structurally repair, repave, and resurface these courts would be approximately
$60,000. A Court Renovation Project at Tennis and Community Park, CIP No. 027033, has
been completed and the remaining fund balance is approximately $94,000. The Commission
recommends that $60,000 be transferred from that project for the necessary court restoration
work, with the balance returned to the Park Renovation Fund for future improvement projects.
FISCAL IMP ACT
Sufficient funding is available in the FY 2005/06 Park Renovation Fund, including the transfer
of $60,000 from CIP No. 027033, to offset the cost of the proposed improvements
Respectfully Submitted,
~~ ,/
W. ~olfe c-
Jm Susan Rossi Nelson Fialho
Director of Parks and Finance Director City Manager
Community Services
Attachment: A.
