business and does not feel there is an undue amount of traffic generated by her business and
that restricting the number of students she may teach per day will restrict her income. The
speaker does not feel this business devalues the neighborhood property values; he feels it
could be used as a benefit to a new buyer. In conclusion, he does not feel Ms. Lew's
business has a detrimental impact on the neighborhood.

Ralph Lingis, 2171 Camino Brazos, stated he has lived in the neighborhood since 1983. His
daughter has been taking lessons from Ms. Lew for six years. He supports Ms. Lew's
business in the neighborhood and stated she is providing an educational service to the
children in the community. Mr. Lingis does not want to get into a neighborhood conflict,
and stated that Ms. Lew has been open to all suggestions to make her business acceptable to
the neighborhood. He also does not feel the property values have dropped because of Ms.
Lew's business. Mr. Lingis feels the neighborhood teenagers have contributed to the overall
perception of increased traffic problems.

Carol Boster, 2340 Greenberry Ct., is a music teacher in the Pleasanton elementary schools.
The speaker stated that the District music teachers support the type of service that Ms. Lew
provides for the area children and urged the Commission to approve Ms. Lew to continue
her home piano instruction.

Kathi Lloyd, 3319 Guthrie Ct., has two daughters taking lessons from Ms. Lew and is one
of the parents having to drive her daughters to lessons. Ms. Lloyd stated she is self-
employed and also works out of her home. She believes if the music lessons were given in a
studio, the lessons would become too costly. She also feels Ms. Lew piqued the music
interest in her oldest child who is studying music in college. Ms. Lloyd stated that whatever
restrictions are placed on Ms. Lew should be placed on every other piano teacher in
Pleasanton as well.

Jason Lew, 2145 Camino Brazos, spoke in favor for his mother's application to continue
teaching piano in their home. He spoke of the many instances that his mother has taught
piano in the Pleasanton schools without compensation. He then read letters of support from
his older brothers (Chad and Paul) who are at college. Their mother helps support their
education with the revenue from her in-home piano teaching business.

Ms. Lew read letters of support from Bart Strosburger, 2139 Camino Brazos, and John
Savage, 2107 Camino Brazos.

Eric Duffy, 1841 Paseo Del Cajon, a friend of the Lew brothers, spoke in favor of this
application.

Paul Loop, 5428 Greenville Way, stated there are several teenagers living on this street, and
thought the piano student traffic problems have been alleviated.

Planning Commission Minutes

Page 4

September 14, 1994
