<br />business and professional involvement as a private piano teacher, as well as about filing <br />business license forms and paying City business taxes when it was not mandatory to do so. <br /> <br />Ms. Lew stated she generally agrees with the staff report, however, she requested some <br />modifications to the conditions of approval. She would like to eliminate Condition lc, which <br />restricts her to a maximum of six students per day. Ms. Lew presented her traffic analysis <br />of her students' car trips indicating only 34 individual trips are generated (not 72 as <br />suggested by staff). Ms. Lew would like to delete the first sentence of Condition 3, which <br />restricts student parking to her private driveway. She would rather restrict parking to in <br />front of her house. <br /> <br />Ms. Lew spoke about the cultural and traditional roles in-home music teaching has had. She <br />stated she feels she provides an important service to the neighborhood and community. Ms. <br />Lew confirmed for Commissioner Hovingh that she teaches for three hours without a break. <br /> <br />Chairman Wright clarified with Ms. Lew that she concurs with the restriction of teaching one <br />student at a time. <br /> <br />Commissioner McGuirk questioned why Ms. Lew's traffic analysis differed by day, and Ms. <br />Lew explained some students are dropped off and picked up, while some have parents stay <br />for the lesson, which generates fewer trips. <br /> <br />Commissioner Barker inquired if Ms. Lew has more than six students coming on any <br />particular day at the present time. Ms. Lew stated she does. Commissioner Barker also <br />inquired when she allowed non-residents to teach out of her home. Ms. Lew stated that was <br />for a seven month period, ending in Apri11994. <br /> <br />Kelly Rand, 45 Kitoosh Court, Alamo, spoke in favor of Ms. Lew's application. He <br />described piano playing as an art form and in-home teaching as a traditional method of <br />teaching. He noted that he took violin and voice lessons in the homes of his professional <br />teachers, and he also stated he has had students come to his home for instruction. <br /> <br />Crystal ... spoke in support of this application. Her son has been a student of Ms. Lew, <br />and she related an incident where she was questioned by neighbors while waiting for her son <br />to finish his lesson. She did not feel her appearance would pose as a threat to the <br />neighborhood. <br /> <br />Sue McKinley, 1608 Martin Avenue, spoke in support of this application. Her daughter <br />takes piano lessons from Ms. Lew, and stated that she has been informed several times about <br />the potential problems of traffic and parking. The speaker stated the limitation of Ms. Lew's <br />business hours would directly impact her students. <br /> <br />Dave Pitcher, 2190 Camino Brazos, stated he is familiar with the business of Ms. Lew as his <br />daughter took lessons for six years.
