Dave Trimble, 833 Montevino Drive, spoke in support of the appli tion. He said the
people who do country dancing are normally clean-cut people who 0 not drink or smoke.
He did not think the music or cars would create a noise nuisance ~ r the neighborhood.

Penny Pickens, 1056 Division Street, stated that Romley's is a "no 'ng" business center,
and felt that the dance studio would be revitalizing. She felt that . s was a good opportunity
for Romley's and encouraged approval of the application.

Dennis Thomson returned to the podium. He noted that they have ad the City out to check
the noise levels and said they were under 60 decibels at ten feet. s far as traffic impacts,
he said people tend to come in small groups; not 125 cars at one ti e that would come and
go. He noted there are three air conditioning units on the building, but they want to put in
some additional fans for circulation.

Commissioner Mahern suggested that the closing hours might be 1030 pm on Friday and
Saturday. The applicant indicated that would not work for them.

Commissioner Wright clarified that the applicant is getting a permit for a dance studio, not a
dance hall or club. The applicant agreed with that.

THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED.

,--

Commissioner Wright expressed concern that the application seems 0 be more for a dance
hall or club, not a location to give lessons. He felt that if the busin ss really catches on that
the center could attract a lot of traffic. He would be in favor of not allowing Sunday
opening.

Commissioner Michelotti favored closing hours of 11:00 pm on Fri y and Saturday.

Commissioner Mahern favored closing on Sunday and expressed co rn about it being open
seven days a week.

Chairman Hovingh said he was basically in support of the project as conditioned by staff.

Commissioner Michelotti reminded the Commission that Sunday mig t be the only day some
people could come in to practice. She also pointed out that either a roval or disapproval
could be appealed within 15 days.

A motion was made by Commi..~ioner Michelotti, seconded by C mrni"Sioner Wright,
making the Conditional Use Pennit Findings and approving Case UP-92-33 subject to
the conditions listed in Exhibit B, with the following modification

o That the hours oC operation be changed to close at 1:00 pm on Friday
and Saturday nights;

~

o

That all doors remain closed during the hours of op ration; and

Planning Commission Minutes August 12, 1992

Page 1 g
