In response to Chairman Hovingh's question, Mr. Swift replied tha the normal closing hours
in the complex are 8:00 pm.

THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED.

Dennis Leroy Thomson, 4046 Alvarado Street, Pleasanton, represe ted the application. He
stated he has no problems with the Conditions of Approval and al agreed to the
modification noted by Mr. Swift tonight in regard to keeping all th doors shut during hours
of operation.

Commissioner Mahern questioned Mr. Thomson why he felt it nece sary to be open on
Sunday. Mr. Thomson said Sunday would be a day when people just come in and
practice; it would be somewhat like a brunch/dance. They haven't ompletely decided on the
itinerary for Friday nights; Saturday nights are scheduled to be dan s.

Commissioner Mahern expressed some concern about the possible u e of alcohol on the
premises. Jackie Clark, a dance instructor for the applicant, respon ed that she and her
husband have been teaching dance classes five night a week for ove 100 people. They are
currently teaching at Camp Parks and dances are held there on ce n nights. She noted that
alcohol and their dances do not mix; that people who come to their ance classes and dances
normally do not drink alcohol. The average age group is between 3 and 55; their patrons
are primarily businessmen, a fire chief, park commissioner, etc. Sh noted their dances are
not the same as bar room dances and they do not have the problems associated with bar room
dances. She added their dances are closer to square dances rather th bar room dances.

,--

In response to Commissioner Michelotti's question, Ms. Clark repli that the Planning
Department staff has gone to the site to test for acoustics and wheth any further sound-
proofing would have to be done. She stated that nothing further has 0 be installed. She
further noted that their music is recorded music but they may have b d music about twice a
year. They do intend to install more fans for better ventilation in ad ition to the existing air
conditioning.

Gerald Cooke, 2444 Crestline Road, stated he is speaking as Preside t of the Country
Hustlers Club. He noted that the membership is mostly 35-45 years Id; some preteens
come along with their families. Their purpose is to promote wholeso e family entertainment
in a no smokinglno drinking environment. In response to a concern hat people might drink
in the parking lot, Mr. Cooke said the club has a marshall that monit rs the location and if
he observes someone drinking, they are either asked to stop or to lea e. He said the dancing
is a healthy, enjoyable form of entertainment, and that single people 1 comfortable in
coming into a non-drinking atmosphere. In regard to neighborhood fi s regarding noise of
music and cars, he noted that dances usually go from about 8:30 pm 10:30 pm with people
coming and going at staggered times. He concluded by asking appro al for the application
and felt that Pleasanton badly needs this type of clean entertainment.

,--

Chris McSherry, 3619 Bernal, stated that she is in opposition to the a plication. She stated
she has no complaints about the dancing itself, but did not think the 1 ation is the place for
a dance studio. She expressed concern about noise from music and fr m noise in the parking

Planning Commission Minutes August 12, 1992

Page ~6
