~ Galen Grant, 611 W. Hawthorne Drive, Walnut Creek, project arc itect with Jerry Loving and Associates, stated that he has been heavily involved in the desi n of the project. He briefly reviewed the sanctuary plan and the areas to be landscaped, noting that this plan is just a refinement of the original plan of several years ago. The pI showed the play area, the lawn and green areas, and the eventual removal of the modular wing. He pointed out they plan to heavily landscape the perimeter of the site, in particu the area fronting the neighboring homes. Mr. Grant addressed Condition 8, stating they have no problem wi landscaping the islands; however, they would like to landscape the forward part of the par ng lot islands, but leave the ones to the back of the lot for a playing area for their youth gr up. He felt they have addressed all the issues that have been brought up heretofore, and uested modification of Condition 8. He thought they would have plenty of parking space, particularly because the church is intending to incorporate three different times for church rvices. Commissioner Wright asked Mr. Grant for further clarification as speaking of that they did not wish to landscape. Mr. Grant poin rendering. which islands he was the areas out on the ~ Commissioner Michelotti noted that the Design Review Board had ked that the landscaping of those islands be done in three years. However, she understood . Grant and Mr. Nordin to indicate they would like to keep the back part of the par . g lot open indefinitely for outdoor play, but that they did agree to the Conditions of Appr val at the Design Review Board meeting and would abide by them, unless given permission b the Planning Commission. Mr. Grant reiterated they would like to compromise y landscaping only the end islands, but they do not want to make a huge issue out of it. Chairman Hovingh was appreciative of the fact that the church had rovided handicapped parking spaces. Mr. Grant stated they have provided six handicap spaces. Chairman Hovingh discussed the parking situation with Mr. Grant. He expressed some concern that they might immediately need the spaces taken up by th islands for parking. Mr. Grant indicated that 75 percent of the lot would be used up on unday mornings; the youth group would not be needing that area except on Tuesdays, W nesdays, and possibly Friday evenings. He felt they would have plenty of parking space . planned. Chairman Hovingh further discussed the school district's concern ab ut the perceived threat of baseballs coming from the school playgrounds and hitting the . dows on the east elevation of the Core building. He asked whether those windows m ght utilize shatter- resistant material. Mr. Grant stated he did not think it was likely church would have a problem with balls coming over the fence. He felt that if the backs p is properly designed, there should be very few, if any balls coming over.
