The proposed architecture of the building is a drastic impIovement over what presently exists
and is also designed to blend into the character of the street. Staff is comfortable that the
use is similar to other permitted uses in the Central Commercial District.

Mr. Swift advised that the applicant receives the cabinets in packaged form, then he
assembles the cabinets, adds the Corian counter top, and delivers the finished product to a
construction site. This is not a cabinet shop in the generic sense where the cabinets are made
from raw stock.

Mr. Swift further advised the Commission that the applicant gets the Corian counter top
stock and prepares it for delivery to construction sites. The applicant also has a Corian
material fabrication shop where he fashions accessories from the Corian material. In this
regard, the business is similar to a machine shop.

PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED

Tom Cavala, 3543 Brook Street, Suite 201, Lafayette, has read the staff report and concurs
with the conditions of approval. Mr. Cavala also presented to the Commission a color board
rendering of the proposed building.

In response to Commissioner Dove, Mr. Cavala stated that the bonding chemicals are water
based, with absolutely no odor.

William Hancock, Moraga, described that the Corian material comes to them in sheets, 1/2
inch thick and 10-12 feet long. They then cut the Corian into pieces, glue them together,
and machine it into the various shapes. There is dust control through dust collection bags.

General discussion continued over whether or not the glue compound was water based.

In response to Commissioner Barker regarding downtown parking, the parking lot of this site
is considered a private parking lot.

Commissioner McGuirk inquired if additional noise abatement will be added to the building
during construction. Mr. Swift thought with two walls being fire walls, noise would not be a
problem unless they work with their doors open.

Chairman Wright wondered if the chemicals used in this operation would be reviewed by the
proper officials. Mr. Swift advised that all businesses must comply with the ordinances and
must inform the Fire Department as to what chemicals are being stored.

Some discussion centered around the rustic trim to be used, the "ship-lap" siding, and the
trim colors.

Planning Commission Minutes

Page 5

March 8, 1995
