_ Library Exnansion
Chairperson Roberts believed that there was a library expansion considered in the new Civic
Center design and was concerned that it was not addressed at all. Mr. Rasmussen noted that it
was assumed that it would take place and added that it was clear that there was no support for a
branch library; therefore, an expansion to the existing facility would be planned.
Commissioner Sullivan noted that he would like to see more computers with Internet access that
would be more conducive to doing research.
Commissioner Arkin suggested that wireless access be included in addition to the desktop
computers.
Mr. Rasmussen noted that the Library Commission addressed the computer expansion issue on
page 4, number 7.
Commissioner Fox suggested the addition of more drop-in programs; she noted that the Library
had an extensive reservation system for story times and that the signups were required far in
advance. She added that many people did not show up for the story times when they finally
occurred.
Youth Facilities and Services
'~ Commissioner Fox noted that an indoor swimming pool was part of the proposed capital projects
and suggested that a toddler pool be included. She noted that the toddler wading pool at Club
Sport was the only one in Pleasanton of which she was aware. She noted that both Dublin and
San Ramon featured a public toddler pool.
Commissioner Arkin noted that he supported an indoor swimming pool.
Chairperson Roberts expressed surprise that the Youth Commission listed all recreational items
and that there were no arts or other types of items listed in the proposal for the General Plan
Update.
Commissioner Sullivan agreed with Chairperson Roberts' comment and added that if a youth did
not, for instance, make the cast of the high school play, he or she would have to wait until the
next production. He believed that an arts and theater program would be a significant benefit to
the youth of Pleasanton.
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Sullivan regarding the nature of the Youth Center,
Mr. Rasmussen stated that its primary focus would be middle and high school students.
Arts Facilit Stud
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES, November 10, 2004 Page 10 of 15
