- Commissioner Arkin would like the project to be returned to the applicant so that they could improve the design. He felt that the building was out of date and needed design enhancements to update its "big box" appearance. He supports the concept of the expansion but not the design. Chairperson Roberts disagreed with Commissioner Arkin's assessment and believed that the expansion itself would provide architectural interest. She noted that while the colors would match the main store, the storage azea addition would relieve the flatness of the main wall massing, and the garden center expansion would also help. Commissioner Fox did not object to the back of the store and the stockroom but believed the repetitive nature of the long fence at the garden center could be improved. Commissioner Kameny believed that fence broke up the architecture and added more definition to the building. Commissioner Arkin noted that the proposed design by the Dahlin Group at the May 12, 2004, meeting improved and updated the 1980's appearance of the existing building. He hoped that this design could be updated as well in an economically feasible manner. Commissioner Fox would like to see the inclusion of a focal point in the long fence line. _ Chairperson Roberts suggested that landscaping be planted in front of the fence. She also suggested adding more trellis. Commissioner Maas agreed with the suggestion to add a trellis; she had no problem with the application but thought that the design needs improvement. Commissioner Fox would like to see an elevation of the addition that included the shade cloths. THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED. Commissioner Arkin moved to continue this application for architectural embellishment. Commissioner Fox seconded the motion. ROLL CALL VOTE AYES: Commissioners Arkin, Fox, Kameny, Maas, and Roberts.
