d. PAP-61, Appellant• Anne N'ox (YJllK-ln4 Marro LoUe7Jl:mn moon nmer
Appeal of the Zoning Administrator's approval of a sign design review for the
replacement and installation of new monument signs for Club Hilton Hotel
located at 7050 Johnson Drive. Zoning for the property is PUD-UC-O (Planned
Unit Development -Industrial/Commercial-Office) District.
Mr. Iserson summarized the staff report and detailed the background of this appeal. He
noted that Commissioner Fox appealed only the two monument signs, not the building
signs. He stated that Commissioner Fox had expressed concern with the style and
material of the signs as well as the illumination. She believed that it would be nice to
keep the arch shape of the monument sign and questioned whether the aluminum material
would be appropriate. Staff noticed that a number of signs throughout the City were
made of aluminum with interior illumination and routed out lettering. He believed that
the hotel was attempting to create a more contemporary, corporate image for their
business and that this sign would be consistent with their new corporate identification.
Staff believed that the new signs would be acceptable and in character with other signs
used in the community.
Staff recommended that the Planning Commission deny the appeal and uphold the
Zoning Administrator's approval of this case. Alternatively, the Commission may wish
to uphold the appeal and require that the existing arch-shaped sign be retained.
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPEN.
Mazio Lopez, 7050 Johnson Drive, General Manager, Pleasanton Hilton, noted that the
sign company would describe the sign design to the Commission.
Roy Hanson, Chandler Signs, Oceanside, noted that his company represented Hilton
throughout the country and added that the hotel was upgrading its worldwide corporate
image. He noted that the current signs were identical to the internally-illuminated
aluminum signs that were proposed. He noted that similaz signs would be placed in
Sacramento, San Jose, and the Oakland Airport. He noted that the sign was identical in
size to the current size and that Hilton Blue was the color used. He believed that the sign
would be very attractive and emphasized that the illumination and the construction was
identical to the current sign.
John Fehn, 7050 Johnson Drive, Chief Engineer, Hilton, confirmed that the sign was
made of aluminum, not stone and that the current sign was also internally illuminated.
He noted that the sign used stucco over the aluminum.
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED.
Commissioner Maas moved to deny the appeal, Case PAP-61, thereby upholding the
Zoning Administrator's approval of Case PSDR-184.
Commissioner Roberts seconded the motion.
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES May 12, 2004 Page 9 of 14
