- Chairperson Roberts advised that Item 3, Westbound Stoneridge Drive at Johnson Drive,
was at the entrance to the Mall. Mr. Iserson confirmed that it should be Eastbound
Stoneridge Drive.
Commissioner Arkin noted that the entrance signs in Simi Valley read, "Welcome to
Simi Valley. Relax and Slow Down." He suggested that a similar message be placed on
Pleasanton's signs.
Commissioner Fox suggested that "Please Drive Carefully" rather than "Relax" maybe
more conducive to safety.
Chairperson Roberts noted that she was pleased that no service group logos were
included on these signs.
Commissioner Fox inquired whether the placement of an entry sign on Stanley Boulevard
in East Pleasanton means that the Central Storage "Welcome to Pleasanton" sign at the
corner of Valley Avenue and Stanley Boulevard could be taken down or revisited. She
believed the padlock logo on that sign was unattractive.
Commissioner Maas suggested that the signs be lit, similar to the design employed in San
Ramon, which she believed was very attractive. She thought that the signs were well
designed but that illumination should be provided. If cost is an issue, the signs could be
- phased.
Commissioner Sullivan noted that he did not believe lighting on the sign would be
attractive. He noted that the size seemed rather large and was unsure of the width of the
medians.
Mr. Bocian advised that Traffic Engineering measured all of the medians and added that
the size of the sign had been reduced to accommodate the median widths. He noted that
the signs would be proportional to the width of the medians.
Commissioner Fox inquired whether the sign at the Stoneridge Drive/Johnson Drive
could be placed on the side if no water for landscaping was available.
Mr. Bocian replied that there were two potential locations on Stoneridge Drive and
Johnson Drive; one location was on Stoneridge Drive west of the freeway, which was not
landscaped. The other location is to the east of the first location and is landscaped. He
noted that it was likely that the sign would be placed in that median.
Commissioner Fox inquired whether the City would be pressured to place service
organization logos on the sign and suggested that the "Pleasanton" text be moved further
down on the sign to preclude service club logos. She did not believe that the brown stripe
on the back of the sign was attractive and suggested either a solid brown or green color.
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES February 25, 2004 Page 9 of 19
