Review of the proposed interim station location for the Altamont railroad commuter line.
The proposed station location is immediatelv north of Bernal Avenue on the Union
Pacific Railroad tracts. Access to the site would be via Pleasanton Avenue at the existin!!
Alameda County Fair!!rounds parkin!! lot.

Mr. Iserson presented the staff report regarding the proposed interim station location for the Altamont
railroad commuter line between Stockton and San Jose. He noted that this is a three-year
demonstration program during which it will be determined if it is feasible to transport commuter
passengers. The proposed site would be located on Pleasanton Avenue in the Fairgrounds overflow
parking area between W. Angela and Bernal Avenue. He described the proposed passenger loading
platform, noting that it will be equipped with an Amtrack-type passenger shelter, ticket vending
machines, and a portable wheel-chair lift or ramp. He reviewed the proposed parking for the station.

Mr. Iserson noted that the current access to the site is via W. Angela, but that staff hopes to work
with the Rail Commission to relocate the driveway entrance over toward Pleasanton Avenue where
Old Bernal use to go through. Based on the projections most of the traffic will be coming down 1-
680 to Bernal to the site. Staff is recommending this modification in order to mitigate traffic going
through the W. Angela neighborhood.

He advised that there should be no discernible increase in train noise. He noted that the number of
train trips would remain the same, in that the demonstration project is for four trains per day (two in
the a.m. and two in the p.m.), and that the number of freight train trips would be decreased by four
per day. The only other resulting noise would be from automobiles.

Mr. Iserson commented on the other possible alternatives for the station: surplus property owned by
the railroad on Stanley, potential development on the San Francisco Water Department site, and a
location along the PleasantonlSunol Road.

Mr. Iserson stated that staff feels the site is adequate for the interim location and noted that this item
is before the Planning Commission for its consideration of the interim location and this item will then
go before the City Council. The design of the station will be brought back to the Planning
Commission at a later date.
