Incorporated in 1849 it
is still active today, serving the greater community
as not only an important burial area and place to
remember the past, but also as a greenspace in a
major city. We have work with Elmwood for over
25 years, currently serving as the director of the
cemetery and overseeing this broadening of the
organization’s mandate, with the goal to make
Elmwood increasingly relevant for the greater
community. As part of this effort, we have formed
an important partnership with the Detroit Fire
Department, developing a section for their
members within Elmwood. The picture above is of the original Fireman’s Section dedicated in 1876.
Additionally, through a management agreement our team operates the City of Toledo, Ohio’s
cemeteries.

Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, IL
Primary Contact: Fred Wacker
President
(847) 514-5698 FWacker@marianilandscape.com

Graceland Cemetery is a 119-acre historic non-
profit cemetery founded in 1860 and located just
north of Wrigley Field in Chicago. Our firm has
advised the Board of Trustees for over 15 years,
working to grow their endowment for their
eventual dormancy and overseeing significant
capital projects and operations. As an important
greenspace inside a city, we believe it is imperative
to offer opportunities for our surrounding
community to be a part of the great history and
environmental features of the cemetery. We
worked to get the cemetery certified as an arboretum, which has increased our profile and we now
have multiple public tours related to the trees and history of the property. This was all made possible
by careful management strategies to increase the endowment to a point where the cemetery can
transition to dormancy at any point, knowing that they will be able to support the operation through
investment income.
Docusign Envelope ID: DBCE8D5B-AF97-4F03-B1B3-A8D5FBA62E6F
