Page 1 of 3 <br />Item #7 <br /> <br />CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION <br />AGENDA REPORT <br /> <br /> <br />August 5, 2024 <br />Library and Recreation <br /> <br />TITLE: REVIEW AND APPROVE CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION SHORT-TERM WORKPLAN <br />FOR FY 2024/25 <br /> <br />SUMMARY <br />As stated in Section 2.39.020 of the Pleasanton Municipal Code, “The duties of the Pleasanton <br />Civic Arts Commission shall include the following: Develop a commission workplan to be <br />provided to the City Council for consideration during the budget process. The workplan should <br />be based on the goals and strategies outlined in the ONE Pleasanton Strategic Plan as well as <br />the role of the commission.” As the next two-year budget cycle will be developed in early 2025, <br />staff recommends the commission review and approve a short-term workplan to guide its work <br />over the course of this current fiscal year (July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025) <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Review and approve the Civic Arts Commission's short-term workplan for fiscal year (FY) <br />2024/25. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />As stated in Section 2.34.020 of the Pleasanton Municipal Code (Attachment 1): The duties of <br />the Pleasanton Civic Arts Commission shall include the following: “Develop a commission <br />workplan to be provided to City Council for consideration during the budget process. The <br />workplan should be based on the goals and strategies outlined in the ONE Pleasanton <br />Strategic Plan as well as the role of the commission.” <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br />At the special meeting of the Civic Arts Commission on June 3, 2024, staff sought feedback on <br />art project priorities for FY 2024/25. Four projects were presented: Public Art Plaque <br />Replacement, Project Paint Box involving utility boxes and news racks, Artistic Musical <br />Instruments/Playground Equipment, and QR Codes. Commissioners were tasked with ranking <br />these projects from one to four based on priority. After detailed discussions, each <br />commissioner submitted their ratings. <br /> <br />Six commissioners participated in the meeting, with four of them placing QR Codes or Plaque <br />Replacement among their top two preferences. Additionally, all commissioners ranked Artistic <br />Musical Instruments within their top three choices. The commission expressed interest in <br />researching how to integrate QR codes into the plaque replacements. Furthermore, there was <br />strong support for the Artistic Musical Instruments project, provided that the installations are <br />recognized as true art pieces rather than mere playground equipment. <br /> <br />Based on the discussion and in an effort to align projects with available funding and staffing <br />resources, staff is recommending that the Civic Arts Commission review and approve the Civic <br />Page 12 of 44
