4
Service Centers Nationwide

Using snap traps to control rodents.
Using Insect light traps to support control and monitor infestations of flies.

Biological Control

Biological control is the use of living organisms to control pests like natural enemies (predators,
parasites, pathogens, and competitors). This approach is generally more selective with reduced
risks for non-targeted organisms.

Examples of biological control:
Bacterial or fungal products to control mosquitoes.
Parasitoids (parasitic wasps) to control ants and cockroaches outdoors.

Physical Control

It encompasses changes in the environment to suppress pests. It includes changes in temperature,
humidity, wind, and lighting.

Examples of physical control:
Changing outdoor lamps from LED to low-pressure sodium-vapor types that are less
attractive to flying insects towards the facility.
Freezing incoming goods that arrive infested to stop the spread of stored product pests
indoors.
Using heat/steam to control bed bugs.
Reduction of humidity levels to suppress mite infestations.

Chemical Control

It is the use of pesticides to prevent or control pest infestations. In IPM, pesticides are used only when
needed and in combination with other approaches for more effective, long-term control. With IPM,
less toxic and more selective pesticides will be used in targeted applications, whenever possible to
minimize people, animals, and non-target organisms’ exposures, and the environment
contamination.

Why IPM is Important

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a proactive approach that takes careful consideration of all
available pest control techniques and appropriate preventive measures to discourage the
development of pest populations and keep pesticides and other interventions to levels that are
economically justified and reduce risk to human health and the environment.
DocuSign Envelope ID: 16D1C412-7260-4260-8A87-C870C0BEE374
