Scope of Work
Preparation of Plans,Specifications and Estimates
Sunol Boulevard/1-680 Improvements Project
August 21,2023
Task 2.4 Geotechnical Investigation and Testing
AECOM will evaluate the geotechnical conditions for the Project. The geotechnical
investigation program will:
Field
• Prepare Safe Work Plan for Field Studies
• Obtain Zone 7 Drilling Permit
• Mark explorations for USA and utility clearance by private locating service
• Perform geologic reconnaissance
• Drill up to 13 auger borings to depths ranging from 20 to 50 feet
• Provide Traffic control
Lab
Laboratory testing for design of ground anchor, soil nail and Type 5 ERS as described in
the January 2022 Advanced Planning Study.
Office
Structures
• Perform engineering analyses for design of soil nail, ground anchor and Type 5
concrete cantilever wall for heights, limits and locations shown in January 2022 APS.
• Report format and content consistent with Caltrans 2021 Geotechnical Manual
guidelines.
Task 2.5 Materials /Geotechnical Design Report
• Prepare one draft Materials Report(MR) and one final MR for design of new
pavements along Sunol Boulevard/Pleasanton Sunol Road with response to up to two
rounds of State comments. As-built structural sections and design TI to be provided
by others. Design of cold plane/overlay of existing pavements, and evaluation of
existing pavements for rehabilitation are beyond the scope of the proposed study.
Assumptions and Exclusions
Actual number of borings subject to change pending additional subsurface/site
information, site reconnaissance to evaluate drill rig accessibility, requisite lane closures,
traffic control, permitted working hours, underground and overhead utility conflicts, and
comments from Caltrans on geotechnical work plan which could require additional
borings, different boring methods or test pits.
One exploration for bridge widening will be left open for 24 hours, subject to Caltrans
and Zone 7 approval, to confirm the absence of free groundwater. Construction of
observation wells and/or installation of vibrating wire piezometers is not proposed or
considered in the cost estimate but could be required by Caltrans geotechnical reviewer
following review of the geotechnical work plan.
