includes an exercise that took place on July 26 at the EOC to familiarize staff with
current fire season weather predictions and protocols and procedures relative to wildfire
response including Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) and air quality issues.
Upcoming planned training events include a Wet Season workshop with EOC staff in
September and a citywide earthquake preparedness exercise for the Great Shakeout,
scheduled for October 19.
In April 2023, the DPWG launched a Disaster Academy, which is a foundational
training program that prepares employees to support City operations during a disaster
or significant event that threatens the health and safety of the community. The
objectives of the training are to provide resources for employees to prepare mentally
and physically for a disaster or significant event, train employees as Disaster Service
Workers, and assist employees in obtaining required Federal Emergency Management
(FEMA) certifications.
Alert Systems and Communication
Emergency preparedness alert and warning are key components to disaster response
and recovery. Emergency preparedness information is shared with the community
through City newsletters and media platforms, at public events and in City and
community presentations.
The Pleasanton Police Department (PPD) shares alert notifications in the event of a
local emergency via text and email using the Nixle platform. Individuals can sign up for
Nixle to be notified of events in their area by texting their zip code to 888777. City staff
have shared this information and encouraged the public to sign up for Nixle by including
this information in monthly and quarterly newsletters, and will be posting the information
to social media in early September 2023 in recognition of National Preparedness Month
(www.ready.gov/september).
In the event of a larger scale or more severe disaster, the City may request community
notification through the County AC Alert system. AC Alert notifies community members
in affected areas using phone, text, email, and social media. Alerts will be sent using all
available contact paths, including home and cell phone numbers, as well as email and
the Everbridge app. Community members must sign up to receive AC Alerts by visiting
www.acalert.org and selecting "Sign Up" to create an account. When specific criteria are
met, Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) will contact all cell phones within an area,
similar to an Amber Alert. The WEA alert system was most recently used by the County
during the 2022/23 winter storms.
If an evacuation of an affected area is required, law enforcement and fire agencies will
manage the evacuation for the City, using the countywide Genasys (formerly known as
Zonehaven) software platform. Genasys provides information to assist with an
organized evacuation and notification of those in the designated zones. To enroll in
Genasys and learn more, including to determine which zone a resident lives in,
community members are encouraged to visit https://protect.genasys.com.
