Sunol Boulevard 20-Inch Water Main (F-7 Line)
A new 18-inch water line is needed on Sunol Boulevard from First Street and Bernal
Avenue to Sycamore Creek (approximately 4,500 linear feet) to increase the capacity of
the existing 12-inch and 16-inch water lines in the roadway (Figure 6). The existing 12-
inch cast iron pipe built before the 1960s is nearing the end of its useful life and will be
recommended for replacement as part of the Water System Master Plan. Also
recommended is to increase the new water line size from 18 inches to 20 inches to
replace the capacity of the 12-inch line when it is decommissioned. This will increase
the estimated cost from $410 per linear foot to $440 per linear foot. A new 12-inch water
line is estimated at $330 per linear foot and provides a cost savings of $300 per linear
foot when compared to keeping an 18-inch line and installing a new 12-inch line
separately. The new water line will parallel the existing water lines in Sunol Boulevard
but will be placed deeper to accommodate the future decommissioning of the 12-inch
line. Mark Thomas & Company, Inc. will design the water line on a time and material
basis for a not-to-exceed amount of $231 ,906 (see Attachment 5).
1 _
nYcxruK ivrt WK
Ul
A' f
Figure 6 — Sunol Boulevard (F-7 Line)
Design Expenditures
The design expenditures for the interim water improvements work, including a 10
percent design contingency, total $1,119,487 and are recommended to be funded from
the Annual Water Distribution System Improvements, CIP No. 23183 and CIP No.
24183. The combined CIP funding provides $2 million; the total expenditures are
$1 ,939,060, which includes work performed by DPI, Inc., the Rain for Rent pump rental
and the design costs for the interim water improvements (see Attachment 1). Due to the
accelerated schedule to develop the scope of work, a 10 percent design contingency for
each professional design services agreement is recommended to address any potential
unforeseen work issued by the City as an amendment to the agreement if necessary.
