A-44 | City of Pleasanton Housing Needs Assessment <br />Non-English Speakers <br />California has long been an immigration gateway to the United States, which means that many <br />languages are spoken throughout the Bay Area. Since learning a new language is universally <br />challenging, it is not uncommon for residents who have immigrated to the United States to have <br />limited English proficiency. This limit can lead to additional disparities if there is a disruption in <br />housing, such as an eviction, because residents might not be aware of their rights, or they might <br />be wary to engage due to immigration status concerns. <br />In Pleasanton, 3.5 percent of residents five years and older identify as speaking English not well <br />or not at all, which is below the proportion for Alameda County. Throughout the region the <br />proportion of residents five years and older with limited English proficiency is eight percent.
