In response to Councilmember Narum, Landscape Architect Gruber clarified the pickleball courts would
be for first-come, first-served usage.
Mayor Brown opened the public hearing.
Robert Beanland endorsed the project. He introduced the Tri-Valley Pickleball Club whose goal is to
help grow the sport in the Tri-Valley. He reported they would like to partner with Pleasanton's Parks and
Recreation staff.
David Burg reported he plays pickleball throughout the Tri-Valley but never in Pleasanton without a cost
being involved. He called to move from a pay-to-play to a free sport. He reported as a Muirwood
resident the tennis courts are underused. He encouraged the City Council to approve the conversion.
Jeff Bryant encouraged the City Council to construct dedicated pickleball courts in the City and
commended the staff's proposal.
Jeff Grave supported the conversion to pickleball courts and suggested future tennis court resurfacing
could include dual striping for pickleball. He suggested Stoneridge Creek as a good option for this dual
striping.
Mayor Brown closed the public hearing.
Councilmember Narum moved to approve the staff recommendation. Councilmember Balch seconded
the motion.
Councilmember Narum reported she lives near Muirwood and has rarely seen more than two courts in
use at the same time. She explained this will allow tennis players to still have space while getting more
use from the other courts.
Councilmember Balch commended staff's work on the Proposition 68 funding.
Councilmember Arkin reported pickleball is increasing in popularity and the location seems appropriate.
She advised there is funding available and supports the project.
Councilmember Testa expressed excitement for the item and noted it is an all-ages sport.
Mayor Brown noted switching two tennis courts to six pickleball courts is the right way to go and
expressed support for the project.
MOTION: It was m/s by Narum/Balch to approve staff's recommendation. Motion passed by the
following vote:
Ayes: Councilmembers Arkin, Balch, Narum, Testa, Mayor Brown
Noes: None
Absent: None
5. Review and prioritize capital improvement projects included in City Council's Priorities Work Plan
Interim City Manager Dolan clarified the item is to prioritize the capital improvement projects on the City
Council's priority list. He requested the Councilmembers identify their top two priorities for staff to
dedicate Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) funds to identify what should be done first. He advised the
pickleball courts can come off the list because the City Council just voted to fund and approve them.
City Council Minutes Page 13 of 18 April 12, 2022
