Concept 1: All the necessary items of work required to re-open the range in a fixed
pistol-only firing lane configuration. This concept will be the basis of the construction
design documents. The work may include mitigation of the existing sand trap, the
extension and widening of the eastern end of the range, installation of a new rubber
bullet trap, roof modifications to accommodate the new trap, a new targeting system,
new lighting, and ventilation improvements.
Concept 2: Concept 1 items and additional items necessary to add rifles in addition to
pistols in fixed firing lane configuration. This may include modifying or replacing
overhead baffles, modifying, or replacing sections of the sidewalls and adding the
necessary support for the heavier overhead baffles.
Concept 3: Concept 2 items and additional items necessary to add tactical training
within the facility. Tactical training improvements allow an officer to utilize the areas
between the shooting line and the bullet trap. This may include the installation of
additional roof baffles (to provide 100 percent coverage), the 100 percent extension of
the sidewall protections (as is necessary with tactical training) and adding the necessary
support for heavier overhead baffles.
The purpose of concepts 2 and 3 is to provide budgetary pricing and coordination of
future phases of construction as funding becomes available without reconstructing prior
completed improvements.
Current rubber bullet trap systems are longer than the range's original trap system and
require a portion of the sand trap system to be removed so a foundation can be
installed. The sand in the current trap is considered hazardous material and will require
special handling and disposal. There are options to clean the sand and relocate it to
other portions of the range for disposal when the facility is decommissioned. These
options will be reviewed during the design.
The automatic targeting system is no longer functioning, and portable plywood stands
with metal plates were being utilized as static targets. It is recommended that the
automatic targeting system be replaced and set up for fixed firing line use. The lighting
system will be replaced and upgraded to current standards. The existing facility has no
mechanical ventilation and best practices recommend the installation of a ventilation
system to provide positive airflow at the firing line. For tactical training, additional
overhead baffles will be required to provide 100 percent coverage of the roof area. The
existing roof truss frames have limited additional capacity and additional structural
support will be necessary to accommodate additional metal cladding.
