DISCUSSION Notice cards were sent to a 1,000 -foot radius of Ken Mercer Sports Park for this September 6, 2022, City Council meeting and an announcement was made via social media and directly to the sports groups. The three location options are shown in Attachment 1. Based upon sport user group feedback, Parks and Recreation Commission direction, and information on field and pitch size from neighboring cities, staff recommends City Council select location Option 2 for a cricket field at Ken Mercer Sports Park, with an oval shape to allow for both youth and adult play (Attachment 3). The positives of location Option 2 include: This location could accommodate an oval cricket field with a radius of 195 -feet parallel with the pitch and 180 -feet perpendicular to the pitch, allowing both youth and adults to play safely • The cricket pitch would be in the middle of this area and constructed of cement or decomposed granite with an artificial turf overlay • The cricket field in this location could safely accommodate a cricket game/practice with simultaneous use of soccer fields 4 and 5 to the west This was the preferred location of the sport user groups currently utilizing this area (PGSL, RAGE, and Ballistic) This location was recommended by the Parks and Recreation Commission. The potential challenges of location Option 2 include: • Adding a cricket field in this area would require the complete removal of the Hard Ball (HB) B field and associated fencing, backstop, and bleachers • The area where the pitch would be located would require grading and drainage modifications • This location was not the preferred option of survey respondents The outermost perimeter is close to the walking path. Staff would like to test play to determine if safety netting or fencing is necessary • Due to the placement of the field and its total diameter, soccer field 6 would not be accessible while cricket matches are taking place • To accommodate the movement of sport user group allocations to other locations, the City's adult softball program would be reduced.
