This location could accommodate a cricket field with a radius of 200 -feet parallel
to the pitch and 180 -feet perpendicular to the pitch, providing sufficient space for
both youth and adult cricket play
The cricket pitch could be constructed in between the two existing soccer fields
without impacting the existing soccer field layout and would likely be constructed
of cement or decomposed granite with an artificial turf overlay.
Potential Challenges:
• Soccer fields 4 and 5 are the only fields that can accommodate nine versus nine
play and would be unavailable to the soccer organizations during cricket play.
Soccer and cricket seasons overlap
• The area where the pitch would be located currently serves as a drainage area
and significant grading and drainage modifications would be required
• To accommodate the movement of sport user group allocations to other
locations, the City's adult softball program would be reduced.
Option 3:
Positives:
• This location could accommodate a cricket field with a radius of 205 -feet parallel
to the pitch and 190 -feet perpendicular to the pitch
• There is no impact to existing sports users
• The actual pitch would be constructed in the middle of the two existing football
fields so that football would not be disturbed.
Potential Challenges:
■ The cricket season would be limited to March — May
• This was not the preferred location of any sports groups, including cricket
• This was not the preferred location of survey respondents
• The outermost perimeter is very close to the walking trail on three sides and is
close to neighboring homes.
The Parks and Recreation Commission voted 5-0 to recommend placement of a cricket
field in location Option 2 at Ken Mercer Sports Park and asked that staff work with the
current sport user groups in that location to find a solution that provides them the same
amount of field space and does not require the elimination of the adult softball program.
Staff met with PGSL, BUSC, and RAGE to discuss field use. All parties are willing to
work together to come up with a solution that allowed for cricket, soccer, girls' softball,
and adult softball to continue. PGSL is willing to try sharing the adult softball complex
with the adult softball league Mondays -Thursdays. Soccer is willing to vacate the Upper
Bernal field on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays for use by PGSL, allowing full
scale adult softball programs to run on these days. A modified adult softball program
could be provided within these parameters.
