Sending notice cards to owners and occupants within a 1,000 -foot radius of Ken
Mercer Sports Park notifying residents of the survey, the website and the August
11, 2022, Parks and Recreation Commission meeting
Sending additional notice cards to the same radius on August 1, 2022, for the
August 11, 2022, Parks and Recreation Commission meeting.
The survey was available for public comment from June 17 -July 11, 2022. During this
period, 536 responses were received. Results are included as Attachment 2. Of the
three locations, Option 1 was the slight preference of survey respondents.
Staff spoke with Pleasanton Girls Softball League (PGSL), Pleasanton Little League,
Pleasanton RAGE Girls Soccer Club, and Pleasanton Ballistic United Soccer Club
(BUSC) and shared that each organization currently using a field located in Option 1 or
2 would be relocated to other fields to maintain the same field allocations. This meant
moving soccer to a different field in the city (Upper Bernal) and providing a minimum of
three fields in the adult softball complex for PGSL, thereby eliminating the adult softball
program.
Staff also met with Pleasanton Junior Football League and discussed a cricket field in
Option 3. The football league's typical season is from June -October. The fields at Ken
Mercer Sports Park are typically closed from November -February. Staff shared with the
football league that if a cricket field were added to this location, football would continue
to have its regular season allocation and cricket would be allocated space between
March -May.
The sports organizations were in favor of adding a cricket field to Ken Mercer Sports
Park. The organizations differed in which option was their number primary choice. All
organizations felt that Option 3 was not a viable option. Option 2 received the most
positive votes.
Staff also spoke with representatives from the cities of San Ramon and Dublin
regarding their cricket fields. San Ramon currently has two cricket fields both of which
are oval and have a roughly 200 -foot radius parallel to the pitch placement and a 155 -
foot radius perpendicular to the pitch placement. A third cricket field is currently under
construction that is circular and is also about a 200 -foot radius from the pitch. The City
of Dublin's current cricket field at Emerald Glen Park has a 185 -foot radius from the
pitch.
At the August 11, 2022, Parks and Recreation Commission meeting the commission
recommended location Option 2, in an oval configuration and requested that staff
develop a way to continue offering adult softball leagues and play. Staff has since met
with the affected sports user groups (PGSL, RAGE and BUSC) and feels confident that
the youth sports needs can be accommodated, while offering a limited adult softball
league.
