highways. The Superpave was developed mainly to be used on highways and therefore, there are some concerns about using it on local roads due to added costs, extra unneeded components, and pavement smoothness. It is anticipated that Superpave will become the pavement standard for all paving projects and will be required for projects with Federal funding. California's Asphalt Pavement Association has developed a Local Street Superpave mix to address some of the concerns with utilizing Superpave on local streets. The pilot test section of roadway will provide staff an opportunity to learn and adjust the pavement mix design to be ready for implementation when Superpave becomes standardized. The second component of the project consists of preparatory work for approximately 0.92 million square feet of roadway scheduled for slurry sealing later this year. This work consists of pavement repair and crack sealing. Pavement repair involves removing 4 to 6 inches of the existing pavement section down to the roadway aggregate base material and replacing it with new asphalt concrete with the same thickness as removed. This is done when the pavement has failed in isolated areas and before the entire street surface is slurry sealed. This is the same repair method performed on the reconstructed streets and as described above. Generally, the streets that are slurry sealed instead of reconstructed have a better overall condition. Crack sealing involves cleaning the pavement cracks to prepare them for a sealant, which is then smoothed so that the material is flush with the existing asphalt concrete surface. The following streets are included in the second component of work and will be slurry sealed later this year under a separate project.
