None.
3. Public comment from the audience regarding items not listed on the agenda
Gary Sears expressed frustration that trails maintenance was not an agenda item; that
the bicycle sharrows were still not in place on the Bernal Avenue Bridge; and that it took
two years to get the uneven pavement signs on the Arroyo Mocho Trail and Alamo Canal
Trail. He questioned the City's objectives on the test trails section. He expressed anger
at "staff's indifference, incompetence and negligence".
Member Houston concurred with the difficulty in getting issues resolved.
Member Piekarski agreed with Mr. Sears sentiment.
MATTERS BEFORE THE COMMITTEE
4. Sunol Boulevard/First Street and Bernal Avenue Intersection Update
Associate Traffic Engineer Nelson presented the staff report indicating the plans were
95% complete.
Member Maciel confirmed that all four corners had floating islands and the clip turn lane
would be omitted. Associate Traffic Engineer Nelson explained that the entire intersection
would be redone and the existing island removed. Member Maciel voiced his continued
dislike of the floating concrete islands and expressed concern with the sharp turns and
narrowed lanes. He suggested utilizing paint instead of the islands. Associate Traffic
Engineer Nelson discussed traffic congestion at the intersection. He confirmed that there
would be one turn lane to go east on Bernal.
Member Houston asked about east bound on Sunol where the bike lane went onto the
sidewalk. Associate Traffic Engineer Nelson explained the path and ramp onto First
Street. Member Houston expressed dissatisfaction with the shared use on that stretch.
Associate Traffic Engineer Nelson stated the surface would be redone. Member Houston
requested an actual bike lane.
Member Piekarski asked about the protected corners and stated they seemed too small
and the turns too sharp. Associate Traffic Engineer Nelson discussed the proposed
bikeways.
5. Owens Drive and Hopyard Road Intersection Update
Associate Traffic Engineer Nelson provided an update on the project.
In response to Member Houston, Associate Traffic Engineer explained the yellow areas
on the diagram and slip lane at Gibraltar.
Bicycle, Pedestrian & Trails Committee Minutes January 24, 2022
Page 2 of 5
