City staff analyzed Bernal Community Park as a possible cricket field location because it
had the potential to check all the boxes for a long-term solution. This location has:
• An undeveloped area, currently slated for a baseball field, that could be
developed as cricket field
• This area is currently being utilized as overflow parking. A new location for
overflow parking would need to be determined
While this location within Bernal Community Park is undeveloped the rest of the
park is developed, thereby lowering overall construction costs
Staff presented the near-term and long-term solutions to the Parks and Recreation
Commission on November 18, 2021. Staff sent meeting notice cards to the Muirwood
neighborhood and shared information about the meeting via social media.
Prior to the meeting, staff received emails and/phone calls from approximately 15
residents of the Muirwood neighborhood sharing feedback on the proposed cricket field
at Muirwood Community Park. Six residents spoke at the meeting. All residents had
concerns, questions, or comments regarding parking, safety, or additional impact to the
park. Most comments received were not in favor of placing a cricket field at Muirwood
Community Park.
The Parks and Recreation Commission discussed the following at its meeting:
• Questioned the field size needed to play youth cricket and if Muirwood
Community Park would accommodate both youth and adult play
• Stated that youth cricket is played safely simultaneously with other sports in
Dublin and San Ramon
• Asked about the future of Staples Ranch and indicated that Pleasanton could
become a world class location for cricket with this location
• Had questions about the distinction between near-term and long-term
• Shared that if a pitch was oriented correctly at Muirwood Community Park that
safety would not be a concern
• Acknowledged the emergence of different sport activity over the years and felt
the staff had done a good job at trying to determine a location for cricket
• Expressed concerns after listening to community feedback and questioned what
safety features and signage could be placed at Muirwood
• Suggested hosting an outreach activity with the community to demonstrate the
game of cricket and answer additional questions
A motion was made to move forward with recommending approval of a near-term
cricket field at Muirwood Community Park and a long-term cricket field be placed at
Staples Ranch; the Commissioner approved the motion 5-0.
Based on feedback from the Commission, staff proceeded with additional community
outreach including hosting a cricket demonstration for the community. Staff sent notice
cards to the Muirwood community and posted via social media announcing three
community outreach events slated to provide information and gather feedback on the
proposed cricket field at Muirwood Community Park.
