I
live two blocks from this park and use it regularly. The notice I received in the mail yesterday
was the first time I found out about it. This is unacceptable. The neighborhood of Highland
Oaks and the adjacent ones all use this park, and to find out that this was nearly a done deal
was distressing.
There is no reason why a Cricket Field should be put in Muirwood Park. It should be
put at Ken Mercer or at Bernal Community Park. One of the people on the P&R Commission
told me that people have been asking for places to play Cricket and at the same time,
enrollment in Little League has declined drastically. So why not take two of the "empty" ball
fields and convert them for Cricket—rather than try to fit a square peg in a round hole by
forcing one into Muirwood Park. That park was never meant for an organized sports field. For
a small park, it already has a basketball court, dog park, group barbecue picnic area, and
playground. It hosts many soccer practices and games, Pop Warner football practice, and it is
used by many for fun pick-up games. People set-up volleyball nets, use the field to play catch,
frisbee or throw a football. These activities would be disrupted by having organized Cricket
games there. It is not fair to the local residents at all.
Additionally, there is no parking lot—only off-street parking on ONE street. When
there are soccer games, the entire street is full of cars trying to parallel park. Adding Cricket
would only make that worse. Some people say that parents would "drop off' their kids and not
park. That is just a not true. Parents stay to watch practices and games. People exiting their
cars on the street side face oncoming traffic. There are "near misses" all the time with kids and
dogs darting out into the street. More traffic and more cars trying to park is just a recipe for
disaster on Muirwood. Other parks in Pleasanton have streets on multiple sides where people
can park, but not Muirwood. The sports parks are much better suited for a Cricket Field.
